Chapter 1 · Revelation
How the revelation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began

Translation
Ibn Abbas reported concerning the words of the Exalted “Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it”: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to endure great strain from the sending down of revelation, and part of that was that he would move his lips – Ibn Abbas said: “I will move them for you as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to move them.” And Sa'id said: “I will move them as I saw Ibn Abbas move them.” And he moved his lips. – So Allah the Exalted sent down: “Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it. Upon Us is its collection and its recitation.” He said: That is, its being collected for you in your chest, and that you recite it. “So when We recite it, follow its recitation.” He said: So listen to it and be silent. “Then upon Us is its explanation.” Then upon Us is that you recite it. After that, whenever Jibril (Gabriel) came to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would listen, and when Jibril had left, the Prophet ﷺ would recite it as he had recited it.
