Chapter 48 · The Book of the Merits of the Companionsحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، قَالَ: كُنَّا نَأْتِي عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو، فَنَتَحَدَّثُ إِلَيْهِ - وَقَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ: عِنْدَهُ - فَذَكَرْنَا يَوْمًا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ، فَقَالَ: لَقَدْ ذَكَرْتُمْ رَجُلًا لَا أَزَالُ أُحِبُّهُ بَعْدَ شَيْءٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: خُذُوا الْقُرْآنَ مِنْ أَرْبَعَةٍ: مِنِ ابْنِ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ فَبَدَأَ بِهِ وَمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، وَأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، وَسَالِمٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ.

We used to go to Abdullah bin 'Amr رضی اللہ عنہ and talk to him, Ibn Numair said: One day we made a mention of Abdullah bin Mas'ud رضی اللہ عنہ , whereupon he said: You have made mention of a person whom I love more than anything else. I heard Allah's Messenger ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) as saying: Learn Qur'an from four persons: Ibn Umm 'Abd (i. e. 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud) رضی اللہ عنہ he started from him-then Mu'adh bin Jabal رضی اللہ عنہ and Ubayya bin Ka'b رضی اللہ عنہ , then Salim the ally of Abu Hudhaifa رضی اللہ عنہ .
