Sahih

The times of prayer and their merit

Translation

Ibn Shihab reported that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz delayed the prayer one day. Urwah ibn az-Zubayr came in to him and told him that al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah had delayed the prayer one day while he was in Iraq, and that Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari came in to him and said, “What is this, O Mughirah? Do you not know that Jibril (Gabriel) came down and prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; then he prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; then he prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; then he prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; then he prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; and that he then said, ‘This is what I was commanded’?” Umar said to Urwah, “Be mindful of what you narrate! Was it really Jibril who established the time of the prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” Urwah said, “That is how Bashir ibn Abi Mas'ud used to narrate from his father.” Urwah said, “And Aishah told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray the Asr prayer while the sun was still in her chamber, before it rose.”

Translator’s note: The five prayers correspond to the five daily prayer times. Who says “This is what I was commanded” is not clear (Jibril or the Prophet ﷺ). “Before it rose”: before the sunlight in the chamber climbed up the walls, i.e. still early in the afternoon. Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari is the father of Bashir.

Deutsch

Abdülazîz'in bir gün namazı geciktirdiğini rivayet etti. Urve b. Zübeyr onun yanına girdi ve ona, Muğîre b. Şu'be'nin (r.a.) Resûlullah'a ﷺ namaz vaktini belirleyen gerçekten Cebrâil miydi?” dedi. Urve: “Beşîr b. Ebû Mes'ûd babasından böyle rivayet ederdi” dedi. Urve dedi ki: “Âişe (r.a.) bana, Resûlullah'ın ﷺ ikindi namazını, güneş henüz onun odasında iken, yükselmeden önce kıldığını anlattı.”

Ebû Mes'ûd el-Ensârî, Beşîr'in babasıdır.
