Chapter 10 · Call to Prayers (Adhaan)
Sahih

The adhan before dawn

Translation

Ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Let not the adhan of Bilal keep any of you – or: anyone among you – from his suhur, for he calls the adhan – or: he calls – at night, so that the one of you who is standing (in prayer) may return and so that he may wake the one of you who is sleeping. And it does not mean that he is saying: (It is) dawn – or: morning.” And he gestured with his fingers, raising them upward and lowering them downward: (not this,) until it is like this. And Zuhayr (demonstrated it) with his two index fingers, one above the other, then he spread them apart to his right and his left.

Translator’s note: That is, the false dawn rises vertically, while the true dawn spreads horizontally across the horizon. Zuhayr is a narrator in this chain.

Other translations

Deutsch

İbn Mes'ûd (r.a.), Nebî'nin ﷺ şöyle buyurduğunu rivayet etti: “Bilâl'in ezanı sizden birini – ya da: sizden hiç kimseyi – sahurundan alıkoymasın.
