Sahih

The imam is appointed only to be followed

Translation

Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah reported: I went in to Aishah and said, “Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” She said: Yes. The Prophet ﷺ became gravely ill and said, “Have the people prayed?” We said, “No, they are waiting for you.” He said, “Put water for me in the basin.” She said: We did so, and he washed himself. Then he tried to get up with effort, but he fainted. Then he came round and said ﷺ, “Have the people prayed?” We said, “No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Put water for me in the basin.” She said: So he sat and washed himself; then he tried to get up with effort, but he fainted. Then he came round and said, “Have the people prayed?” We said, “No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Put water for me in the basin.” He sat and washed himself; then he tried to get up with effort, but he fainted. Then he came round and said, “Have the people prayed?” We said, “No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah” – and the people were staying in the mosque, waiting for the Prophet ﷺ for the later Isha prayer. Then the Prophet ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. The messenger came to him and said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to lead the people in prayer.” Abu Bakr – and he was a tender-hearted man – said, “O Umar, lead the people in prayer.” Umar said to him, “You are more entitled to it.” So Abu Bakr led the prayer during those days. Then the Prophet ﷺ felt some relief in himself and went out between two men, one of whom was al-Abbas, for the Zuhr prayer, while Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him, he began to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ signalled to him not to step back. He said, “Seat me beside him.” So they seated him beside Abu Bakr. He said: Abu Bakr prayed following the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ, and the people (followed) the prayer of Abu Bakr, while the Prophet ﷺ was sitting. Ubaydullah said: Then I went in to Abdullah ibn Abbas and said to him, “Shall I not present to you what Aishah told me about the illness of the Prophet ﷺ?” He said, “Go ahead.” So I presented her account to him, and he objected to nothing in it, except that he said, “Did she name for you the man who was with al-Abbas?” I said, “No.” He said, “It was Ali.”

Translator’s note: The basin (mikhdab) is a washing tub; “get up with effort” means rising with difficulty.

Onu Ebû Bekir'in yanına oturttular. (Râvi) dedi ki: Ebû Bekir, Nebî'nin ﷺ namazına uyarak namaz kılıyor, insanlar da Ebû Bekir'in namazına uyuyorlardı; Nebî ﷺ ise oturuyordu. Ubeydullah dedi ki: Abdullah b. Abbâs'ın (r.a.) yanına girdim ve ona: “Âişe'nin bana Nebî'nin ﷺ hastalığı hakkında anlattıklarını sana arz etmeyeyim mi?” dedim. “Getir bakalım” dedi. Onun anlattıklarını kendisine arz ettim; hiçbir şeyine itiraz etmedi; yalnız şöyle dedi: “Abbas'la birlikte olan adamın adını sana söyledi mi?” “Hayır” dedim. “O, Ali'dir” dedi.

Translator’s note: Leğen (mihdab) yıkanma kabıdır; “güçlükle kalkmak” zorlanarak ayağa kalkmaktır.
