حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ، وَابْنُ حُجْرٍ، - قَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى: أَخْبَرَنَا، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُونَ: - حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ، أَنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ، بَعَثَتْهُ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالشَّامِ، قَالَ: فَقَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ، فَقَضَيْتُ حَاجَتَهَا، وَاسْتُهِلَّ عَلَيَّ رَمَضَانُ وَأَنَا بِالشَّامِ، فَرَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ، ثُمَّ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ، فَسَأَلَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ: مَتَى رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلَالَ؟ فَقُلْتُ: رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ، فَقَالَ: أَنْتَ رَأَيْتَهُ؟ فَقُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، وَرَآهُ النَّاسُ، وَصَامُوا وَصَامَ مُعَاوِيَةُ، فَقَالَ: لَكِنَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ السَّبْتِ، فَلَا نَزَالُ نَصُومُ حَتَّى نُكْمِلَ ثَلَاثِينَ، أَوْ نَرَاهُ، فَقُلْتُ: أَوَ لَا تَكْتَفِي بِرُؤْيَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَصِيَامِهِ؟ فَقَالَ: لَا، هَكَذَا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَشَكَّ يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى فِي نَكْتَفِي أَوْ تَكْتَفِي.

Kureyb’den rivayet edildiğine göre, Ümmü’l-Fadl bint el-Haris onu Şam’da bulunan Muaviye’ye gönderdi. Kureyb dedi ki: „Şam’a vardım ve onun işini gördüm. Ben henüz Şam’dayken Ramazan ayı girdi. Hilali Cuma gecesi gördüm. Ayın sonunda Medine’ye döndüğümde Abdullah ibn Abbas (r.a.) bana hilalden bahsederek sordu: ‚Hilali ne zaman gördünüz?‘ Ben de: ‚Cuma gecesi gördük‘ dedim. ‚Sen bizzat gördün mü?‘ diye sordu. ‚Evet, halk da gördü ve oruç tuttular, Muaviye de oruç tuttu‘ dedim. Bunun üzerine İbn Abbas: ‚Fakat biz onu Cumartesi gecesi gördük. Bu sebeple ya otuz günü tamamlayana kadar ya da hilali görene kadar oruç tutmaya devam edeceğiz‘ dedi. ‚Muaviye’nin görmesi ve oruç tutması senin için yeterli değil mi?‘ diye sordum. Kuraib berichtete, dass Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith ihn zu Mu'awiya nach Syrien (asch-Scham) sandte. Er sagte: „Ich kam in Syrien an und erledigte ihr Anliegen. Während ich noch in Syrien war, begann der Monat Ramadan. Ich sah die Mondsichel [der ersten Nacht] in der Nacht zum Freitag. Ende des Monats kehrte ich nach Medina zurück. Abdullah ibn Abbas (r.a.) befragte mich und erwähnte dann die Mondsichel, wobei er fragte: ‚Wann habt ihr die Mondsichel gesehen?‘ Ich antwortete: ‚Wir sahen sie in der Nacht zum Freitag.‘ Er fragte: ‚Hast du sie selbst gesehen?‘ Ich sagte: ‚Ja, und auch die Menschen sahen sie; sie fasteten und auch Mu'awiya fastete.‘ Daraufhin sagte Ibn Abbas: ‚Wir hingegen haben sie in der Nacht zum Samstag gesehen. Wir werden also so lange weiter fasten, bis wir dreißig Tage vollenden oder die [neue] Mondsichel sehen.‘ Ich fragte: ‚Genügt dir nicht die Sichtung von Mu'awiya und sein Fasten?‘ Er antwortete: ‚Nein, so hat es uns der Gesandte Allahs (ﷺ) befohlen.‘“

Each land has its own sighting of the moon, and if they see the crescent in one land, that does not necessarily apply to regions that are far away from it
I (Fadl) arrived in Syria, and did the needful for her. It was there in Syria that the month of Ramadan commenced. I saw the new moon (of Ramadan) on Friday. I then came back to Medina at the end of the month. Abdullah bin 'Abbas رضی اللہ عنہما asked me (about the new moon of Ramadan) and said: When did you see it? I said: We saw it on the night of Friday. He said: (Did) you see it yourself? I said: Yes, and the people also saw it and they fasted and Mu'awiya رضی اللہ عنہ also fasted, whereupon he said: But we saw it on Saturday night. So we will continue to fast till we complete thirty (fasts) or we see it (the new moon of Shawwal). I said: Is the sighting of the moon by Mu'awiya رضی اللہ عنہ not valid for you? He said: No; this is how the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) has commanded us. Yahya bin Yahya was in doubt (whether the word used in the narration by Kuraib) was Naktafi or Taktafi.
