Sahih

Keeping ablution light

Translation

Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ slept until he snored and then prayed – and sometimes he said: he lay down until he snored – then he stood up and prayed. … I spent a night at the house of my maternal aunt Maymunah. The Prophet ﷺ got up during the night, and when part of the night had passed, the Prophet ﷺ got up and performed a light ablution (wudu) from a hanging old waterskin – Amr described it as light and little – and stood up to pray. So I performed ablution similar to his, then I came and stood on his left – sometimes Sufyan said: on his left-hand side – and he turned me round and placed me on his right. Then he prayed as much as Allah willed; then he lay down and slept until he snored. Then the caller came to him and announced the prayer to him, and he went with him to the prayer, prayed and did not perform ablution. We said to Amr, “Some people say that the eye of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sleeps but his heart does not sleep.” Amr said: I heard Ubayd ibn Umayr say, “The dreams of the prophets are revelation.” Then he recited: “I see in a dream that I am slaughtering you.”

Translator’s note: Amr (ibn Dinar) and Sufyan (ibn Uyaynah) are later narrators; the interjections reflect their wording. The quotation is Qur'an 37:102, the words of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to his son.

İbn Abbâs (r.a.) Amr'a: “Bazı insanlar, Resûlullah'ın ﷺ gözü uyur, kalbi uyumaz, diyorlar” dedik. Amr şöyle dedi: Ubeyd b. Umeyr'i şöyle derken işittim: “Peygamberlerin rüyası vahiydir.” Sonra şu âyeti okudu: “Rüyamda seni boğazladığımı görüyorum.”

Translator’s note: Amr (b. Dînâr) ve Süfyân (b. Uyeyne) sonraki râvilerdir; ara cümleler onların ifadelerini yansıtır. Âyet, Kur'ân 37:102'dir; İbrâhim'in (a.s.) oğluna söylediği sözdür.
