Chapter 9 · Times of the Prayers
Whoever catches a rak'ah of the Asr prayer before sunset

Translation
Ibn Umar reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Your stay compared to the nations that passed before you is like (the time) between the Asr prayer and sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah, and they worked until, when the day was half over, they could not continue, so they were given one qirat each. Then the people of the Gospel were given the Gospel, and they worked until the Asr prayer, then they could not continue, so they were given one qirat each. Then we were given the Qur'an, and we worked until sunset, and we were given two qirats each. So the people of the two Scriptures said, ‘O our Lord, You have given these two qirats each and given us one qirat each, though we did more work.’ He said: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said, ‘Have I wronged you in any of your wage?’ They said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Then it is My bounty, which I give to whomever I will.’”
Translator’s note: Qirat: a unit of measure; here for a share of the wage.
