Chapter 10 · Call to Prayers (Adhaan)
Sahih

Whoever steps in to lead the people in prayer, and then the first imam comes: whether the first steps back or not, his prayer is valid

Translation

Sahl ibn Sa'd reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Banu Amr ibn Awf to make peace between them. The time of the prayer came, and the caller to prayer came to Abu Bakr and said, “Will you lead the people in prayer, so that I call the iqamah?” He said, “Yes.” So Abu Bakr led the prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came while the people were in the prayer, and made his way through until he stood in the row. The people clapped – and Abu Bakr would not turn around in his prayer. When the people clapped a great deal, he turned around and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ signalled to him to stay in his place. Abu Bakr raised his hands and praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded him in that. Then Abu Bakr stepped back until he was level in the row, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went forward and prayed. When he had finished, he said, “O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying firm when I commanded you?” Abu Bakr said, “It is not for the son of Abu Quhafah to pray in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Why did I see you clapping so much? Whoever is troubled by something in his prayer, let him say ‘Glory be to Allah’; for when he says ‘Glory be to Allah’, attention is turned to him. Clapping is only for women.”

Sehl b. Sa'd (r.a.), Resûlullah'ın ﷺ aralarını bulmak için Amr b. Avf oğullarına gittiğini rivayet etti. Namaz vakti girdi; müezzin Ebû Bekir'e (r.a.) gelip: “İnsanlara namaz kıldırır mısın, kamet getireyim mi?” dedi. Ebû Bekir: “Evet” dedi. Ebû Bekir namaz kıldırdı. İnsanlar namazdayken Resûlullah ﷺ geldi; aradan geçerek safta durdu. İnsanlar el çırptılar – Ebû Bekir ise namazında etrafına bakmazdı. İnsanlar el çırpmayı çoğaltınca dönüp baktı ve Resûlullah'ı ﷺ gördü. Resûlullah ﷺ ona yerinde kalmasını işaret etti. Ebû Bekir ellerini kaldırdı ve Resûlullah'ın ﷺ kendisine bu konuda emrettiği şeyden dolayı Allah'a hamdetti. Sonra Ebû Bekir geri çekilip safta yerini aldı; Resûlullah ﷺ öne geçip namazı kıldırdı. Namazı bitirince: “Ey Ebû Bekir, sana emrettiğimde yerinde kalmaktan seni ne alıkoydu?” buyurdu. Ebû Bekir: “Ebû Kuhâfe'nin oğluna Resûlullah'ın ﷺ önünde namaz kıldırmak yakışmaz” dedi. Bunun üzerine Resûlullah ﷺ şöyle buyurdu: “Ne oldu size, el çırpmayı çoğalttığınızı gördüm? Namazında başına bir şey gelen ‘Sübhânallah’ desin; çünkü ‘Sübhânallah’ dediğinde ona dönülür. El çırpmak ancak kadınlar içindir.”
