إِذَا اسْتَوَوْا فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَكْبَرُهُمْ

If they are equal in recitation, let the eldest of them lead them

قَدِمْنَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَنَحْنُ شَبَبَةٌ، فَلَبِثْنَا عِنْدَهُ نَحْوًا مِنْ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً، وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَحِيمًا فَقَالَ " لَوْ رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَى بِلاَدِكُمْ فَعَلَّمْتُمُوهُمْ، مُرُوهُمْ فَلْيُصَلُّوا صَلاَةَ كَذَا فِي حِينِ كَذَا، وَصَلاَةَ كَذَا فِي حِينِ كَذَا، وَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ، وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ ".

Malik ibn al-Huwayrith reported: We came to the Prophet ﷺ when we were young men, and we stayed with him about twenty nights. The Prophet ﷺ was merciful, and he said, “If only you would return to your lands and teach them! Order them to pray such-and-such a prayer at such-and-such a time, and such-and-such a prayer at such-and-such a time. And when (the time of) the prayer comes, let one of you call the adhan for you, and let the eldest of you lead you in prayer.”
