Chapter 3 · Knowledge
Taking turns in (seeking) knowledge

Translation
Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: A neighbour of mine from the Ansar and I lived among Banu Umayyah ibn Zayd – which is one of the upland villages of Medina – and we used to take turns going down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: he would go down one day and I would go down one day. When I went down, I would bring him the news of that day, of revelation and other things, and when he went down, he would do the same. Then my companion, the Ansari, went down on his turn and knocked violently on my door, saying: “Is he there?” I was alarmed and went out to him, and he said: “Something tremendous has happened.” He said: So I went in to Hafsah, and she was weeping. I said: “Has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorced you?” She said: “I do not know.” Then I went in to the Prophet ﷺ and said while standing: “Have you divorced your wives?” He said: “No.” So I said: “Allah is the Greatest.”

Hattâb (r.a.)
