Kapitel 1 · Der Beginn der Offenbarung

Abu Sufyan ibn Harb reported that Heraclius sent for him while he was with a caravan of Quraysh – they were merchants in Syria – during the period in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a truce with Abu Sufyan and the disbelievers of Quraysh. They came to him while they were in Iliya. He summoned them to his court, with the great men of the Byzantines around him. Then he called them forward, called for his interpreter, and said: “Which of you is closest in lineage to this man who claims to be a prophet?” Abu Sufyan said: I said: “I am the closest of them to him in lineage.” He said: “Bring him close to me, and bring his companions close and place them behind him.” Then he said to his interpreter: “Tell them: I am going to ask this man about that man. If he lies to me, declare him a liar.” By Allah, had it not been for the shame of their reporting a lie from me, I would have lied about him. The first thing he asked me was that he said: “What is his lineage among you?” I said: “He is of noble lineage among us.” He said: “Has anyone among you ever made this claim before him?” I said: “No.” He said: “Was there any king among his forefathers?” I said: “No.” He said: “Do the nobles among the people follow him, or the weak?” I said: “Rather the weak.” He said: “Are they increasing or decreasing?” I said: “Rather they are increasing.” He said: “Does any of them turn away from his religion out of displeasure with it after having entered it?” I said: “No.” He said: “Did you accuse him of lying before he said what he said?” I said: “No.” He said: “Does he act treacherously?” I said: “No, and we are now in a truce with him, and we do not know what he will do during it.” Abu Sufyan said: No word allowed me to slip anything in except this one. He said: “Have you fought him?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “And how did your fighting with him go?” I said: “War between us and him goes by turns: he gains from us and we gain from him.” He said: “What does he command you?” I said: “He says: ‘Worship Allah alone and do not associate anything with Him, and abandon what your fathers say.’ And he commands us to observe the prayer, truthfulness, chastity and keeping the ties of kinship.” Then he said to the interpreter: “Tell him: I asked you about his lineage, and you mentioned that he is of noble lineage among you; and so are messengers sent from the noble lineage of their people. I asked you whether anyone among you had made this claim, and you said no; and I said: had anyone made this claim before him, I would say he is a man imitating a claim made before him. I asked you whether there was any king among his forefathers, and you said no; I said: had there been a king among his forefathers, I would say he is a man seeking his father's kingdom. I asked you whether you accused him of lying before he said what he said, and you said no; so I know that he would not refrain from lying to people and then lie about Allah. I asked you whether the nobles among the people follow him or the weak, and you mentioned that the weak follow him; and they are the followers of the messengers. I asked you whether they are increasing or decreasing, and you mentioned that they are increasing; and such is the matter of faith (iman) until it is complete. I asked you whether anyone turns away from his religion out of displeasure with it after having entered it, and you said no; and such is faith when its joy mingles with the hearts. I asked you whether he acts treacherously, and you said no; and so messengers do not act treacherously. I asked you what he commands you, and you mentioned that he commands you to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, forbids you the worship of idols, and commands you to observe the prayer, truthfulness and chastity. If what you say is true, he will possess the place of these two feet of mine. I knew that he would appear, but I did not think that he would be from among you. If I knew that I could reach him, I would take on the hardship of meeting him, and if I were with him, I would wash his feet.” Then he called for the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which he had sent with Dihyah to the governor of Busra, who had handed it to Heraclius. He read it, and in it was: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the servant of Allah and His Messenger, to Heraclius, the great one of the Byzantines. Peace be upon whoever follows guidance. To proceed: I invite you with the call of Islam. Accept Islam and you will be safe; Allah will give you your reward twice. But if you turn away, upon you is the sin of the Arisiyyin. And: ‘O People of the Book, come to a word that is equal between us and you: that we worship none but Allah, associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as lords besides Allah. But if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are Muslims.’” Abu Sufyan said: When he had said what he said and finished reading the letter, the clamour around him grew, voices were raised, and we were taken out. I said to my companions as we were taken out: “The affair of Ibn Abi Kabshah has indeed become great: even the king of the Banu al-Asfar fears him.” And I remained certain that he would prevail until Allah brought me into Islam. Ibn an-Natur, the governor of Iliya and a confidant of Heraclius, was a bishop over the Christians of Syria. He related that when Heraclius came to Iliya, he woke one morning in low spirits. Some of his patricians said: “We find your appearance strange.” Ibn an-Natur said: Heraclius was a soothsayer who looked into the stars. He said to them when they asked him: “Tonight, when I looked into the stars, I saw that the king of circumcision has appeared. Who among this people practise circumcision?” They said: “None practise circumcision except the Jews, so do not let them worry you. Write to the cities of your kingdom so that they kill the Jews among them.” While they were thus occupied, a man sent by the king of Ghassan was brought to Heraclius, giving news of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Heraclius had questioned him, he said: “Go and see whether he is circumcised or not.” They looked at him and told him that he was circumcised. He asked him about the Arabs, and he said: “They practise circumcision.” Heraclius said: “This is the king of this people; he has appeared.” Then Heraclius wrote to a friend of his in Rome who was his equal in knowledge, and Heraclius travelled to Hims. He had not yet left Hims when a letter from his friend reached him, agreeing with Heraclius' view about the appearance of the Prophet ﷺ and that he was a prophet. Then Heraclius admitted the great men of the Byzantines into a palace of his in Hims, then ordered its doors to be locked, and they were locked. Then he looked down on them and said: “O people of Byzantium, do you want success and right guidance, and that your kingdom remain firm? Then pledge allegiance to this Prophet!” They bolted towards the doors like wild donkeys and found them locked. When Heraclius saw their aversion and lost hope of their believing, he said: “Bring them back to me!” And he said: “I said what I just said to test the firmness of your attachment to your religion, and now I have seen it.” They prostrated before him and were pleased with him, and that was the last of Heraclius' affair.

Ebû Süfyân b. Harb (r.a.) Allah'ın kulu ve Resûlü Muhammed'den Rumların büyüğü Herakleios'a. Hidayete uyanlara selâm olsun. Bundan sonra: Seni İslâm'a davet ediyorum. Ona baktılar ve sünnetli olduğunu Herakleios'a bildirdiler.
