Chapter 10 · Call to Prayers (Adhaan)
A man's saying, “We have not prayed”

Translation
Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that Umar ibn al-Khattab came to the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of the Trench and said, “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I could hardly pray until the sun was about to set.” And that was after the fasting person had broken his fast. The Prophet ﷺ said, “By Allah, I have not prayed it.” Then the Prophet ﷺ went down to Buthan, and I was with him. He performed ablution (wudu) and then prayed – meaning the Asr prayer – after the sun had set, and after it he prayed the Maghrib prayer.
Translator’s note: The prayer meant is the Asr prayer, which Umar could only pray shortly before sunset. Buthan is a valley in Madinah. The phrase “meaning the Asr prayer” is from a narrator.

Abdullah (r.a.), Hendek günü Ömer b. Hattâb'ın (r.a.) Nebî'ye ﷺ gelip şöyle dediğini rivayet etti: “Ey Allah'ın Resûlü, vallahi güneş batmak üzere oluncaya kadar neredeyse namaz kılamadım.” Bu, oruçlunun iftar ettiği vakitten sonra idi. Nebî ﷺ: “Vallahi ben onu kılmadım” buyurdu. Sonra Nebî ﷺ Buthân'a indi, ben de onunla birlikteydim. Abdest aldı, sonra güneş battıktan sonra – ikindiyi kastediyor – namazı kıldı, ardından akşam namazını kıldı.
Translator’s note: Kastedilen ikindi namazıdır; Ömer onu ancak güneş batmadan az önce kılabilmişti. Buthân, Medine'de bir vadidir. “İkindiyi kastediyor” ifadesi râviye aittir.
