إِمَامَةِ الْمَفْتُونِ وَالْمُبْتَدِعِ

The imamate of one who has fallen into fitnah and of the innovator

دَخَلَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ وَهْوَ مَحْصُورٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ إِمَامُ عَامَّةٍ، وَنَزَلَ بِكَ مَا تَرَى وَيُصَلِّي لَنَا إِمَامُ فِتْنَةٍ وَنَتَحَرَّجُ. فَقَالَ الصَّلاَةُ أَحْسَنُ مَا يَعْمَلُ النَّاسُ، فَإِذَا أَحْسَنَ النَّاسُ فَأَحْسِنْ مَعَهُمْ، وَإِذَا أَسَاءُوا فَاجْتَنِبْ إِسَاءَتَهُمْ.

Ubaydullah ibn Adi ibn al-Khiyar reported that he went in to Uthman ibn Affan while he was under siege and said, “You are the imam of the people at large, and what you see has befallen you. A leader of strife leads us in prayer, and we feel uneasy (about it).” He said, “The prayer is the best thing that people do. When people do good, do good along with them; and when they do wrong, keep away from their wrongdoing.”
