Chapter 3 · Knowledge
Sahih

قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: {وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً}

The saying of Allah, the Exalted: “And you have not been given of knowledge except a little.”

Translation

Ibn Mas'ud reported: While I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ among the ruins of Medina, and he was leaning on a palm-stalk staff he had with him, he passed by a group of Jews. Some of them said to others: “Ask him about the spirit.” Others said: “Do not ask him, lest he bring something about it that you dislike.” Some of them said: “We will certainly ask him.” A man from among them stood up and said: “O Abu al-Qasim, what is the spirit?” He remained silent. I said (to myself): “He is receiving revelation.” So I stood still. When it had cleared from him, he said: “And they ask you about the spirit. Say: The spirit is of the affair of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little.” Al-A'mash said: That is how it is in our reading.

Translator’s note: Qur'an 17:85. Al-A'mash, a later narrator, refers to the reading “you have been given” (instead of “they”).

Deutsch

İbn Mes'ûd (r.a.)

Sonraki râvilerden A'meş, “size verilmiştir” kıraatini (“onlara” değil) kastediyor.
