Mentioning buying and selling on the pulpit in the mosque

Translation

Aishah reported: Barirah came to her asking her (for help) with her contract of manumission. She said, “If you wish, I will give (the amount) to your people, and the right of patronage (wala') will be mine.” Her people said, “If you wish, give her what remains (of her contract)” – and Sufyan once said: “If you wish, free her, and the patronage will be ours.” – When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, she reminded him of that, and he said, “Buy her and free her, for the patronage belongs to the one who frees.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood on the pulpit – and Sufyan once said: then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit – and said, “What is the matter with people who stipulate conditions that are not in the Book of Allah? Whoever stipulates a condition that is not in the Book of Allah, it is not his, even if he stipulates it a hundred times.”

Translator’s note: Barirah was a slave woman who had made a contract with her owners to buy her freedom in instalments. Right of patronage (wala'): the lasting bond between the one who frees and the freed slave, including inheritance. Sufyan (ibn Uyaynah) is one of the narrators of this hadith.

Âişe (r.a.) şöyle rivayet etti: Berîre (r.a.), kitâbet anlaşması konusunda (yardım) istemek için ona geldi.
