Paying the one-fifth is part of faith

Translation

Nasr ibn Imran ad-Duba'i reported: I used to sit with Ibn Abbas, and he would seat me on his couch. He said, “Stay with me so that I may give you a share of my wealth.” So I stayed with him for two months. Then he said: When the delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Prophet ﷺ, he said, “Who are the people?” – or, “Who is the delegation?” They said, “(We are of) Rabi'ah.” He said, “Welcome to the people – or, to the delegation – neither disgraced nor regretful!” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, we cannot come to you except in the sacred month, and between us and you is this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar. So command us with a clear matter which we can tell those we left behind and by which we may enter Paradise.” And they asked him about drinks. So he commanded them four (things) and forbade them four. He commanded them to have faith in Allah alone. He said, “Do you know what faith in Allah alone is?” They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving Zakat, fasting Ramadan, and that you give one fifth of the spoils of war.” And he forbade them four: green earthenware jars, gourd vessels, hollowed palm stumps and pitch-coated vessels – and sometimes he said: tar-coated vessels. And he said, “Keep them in mind and tell them to those you left behind.”

Translator’s note: The vessels named (hantam, dubba', naqir, muzaffat or muqayyar) cause drinks to ferment quickly. Rabi'ah and Mudar: Arab tribal confederations.

Translator’s note: Die genannten Gefäße (Hantam, Dubba', Naqir, Muzaffat bzw. Muqayyar) lassen Getränke schnell gären. Rabi'a und Mudar: arabische Stammesverbände.

Türkçe

Nasr b. İmrân ed-Dubaî şöyle rivayet etti: İbn Abbâs (r.a.) ile birlikte otururdum; beni kendi sedirine oturturdu.
