Chapter 3 · Knowledge
Sahih

The Prophet ﷺ urging the delegation of Abd al-Qays to preserve faith and knowledge and to inform those behind them

Translation

Abu Jamrah reported: I used to interpret between Ibn Abbas and the people. He said: The delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “Who is the delegation?” – or: “Who are the people?” They said: “Rabi'ah.” He said: “Welcome to the people – or: to the delegation – neither disgraced nor regretful.” They said: “We come to you from a distant journey, and between us and you is this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar, and we cannot come to you except in a sacred month. So command us with something that we can tell those behind us and by which we will enter Paradise.” So he commanded them four (things) and forbade them four: he commanded them to have faith in Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, alone. He said: “Do you know what faith (iman) in Allah alone is?” They said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “Testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving Zakat, fasting Ramadan, and that you give a fifth of the spoils.” And he forbade them the gourd, the green clay jar and the pitch-coated (vessel). Shu'bah said: Sometimes he said “the hollowed-out stump”, and sometimes he said “the tar-coated (vessel)”. He said: “Remember it and tell it to those behind you.”

Translator’s note: These vessels were used to prepare drinks that quickly become intoxicating. Shu'bah is a later narrator in this chain.

Ebû Cemre şöyle rivayet etti: İbn Abbâs (r.a.) ile insanlar arasında tercümanlık yapıyordum. İbn Abbâs şöyle dedi: Abdülkays heyeti Nebî'ye ﷺ geldi. Nebî ﷺ: “Heyet kimlerdir?” – veya: “Bu topluluk kimlerdir?” – diye sordu. “Yalnız Allah'a imanın ne olduğunu biliyor musunuz?” buyurdu. “Allah ve Resûlü daha iyi bilir.” dediler. Şöyle buyurdu: “Allah'tan başka ilah olmadığına ve Muhammed'in Allah'ın Resûlü olduğuna şahitlik etmek, namazı kılmak, zekâtı vermek, Ramazan orucunu tutmak ve ganimetten beşte birini vermenizdir.” Onları kabak kaptan, yeşil küpten ve ziftli kaptan men etti.

Şu'be bu senedin sonraki râvilerindendir.
