Chapter 3 · Knowledge
One who answers a request for a legal ruling with a gesture of the hand or the head

Translation
Asma bint Abi Bakr reported: I came to Aishah while she was praying and said: “What is the matter with the people?” She pointed to the sky, and there were the people standing (in prayer). She said: “Glory be to Allah.” I said: “A sign?” She indicated with her head, meaning yes. So I stood (in the prayer) until I was overcome by faintness, and I began pouring water over my head. Then the Prophet ﷺ praised Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and extolled Him, and then said: “There is nothing I had not been shown (before) that I have not now seen in this place of mine, even Paradise and the Fire. And it has been revealed to me that you will be tried in your graves like – or close to – I do not know which of the two Asma said – the trial of the False Messiah (ad-Dajjal). It will be said: ‘What do you know about this man?’ As for the believer – or the one with certainty, I do not know which of the two Asma said – he will say: ‘He is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah. He came to us with clear proofs and guidance, and we responded and followed (him). He is Muhammad’ – three times. Then it will be said: ‘Sleep as a righteous one. We already knew that you were certain of him.’ As for the hypocrite – or the doubter, I do not know which of the two Asma said – he will say: ‘I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said it (too).’”
Translator’s note: This was the prayer during a solar eclipse. The interjections “I do not know which of the two Asma said” are from the narrator who transmits from Asma (Fatimah bint al-Mundhir).

Esmâ bint Ebû Bekir (r.a.)
