Translation
Hafsah bint Sirin reported: We used to prevent our young girls from going out on the two Eids. Then a woman arrived and stayed at the castle of Banu Khalaf, and she narrated about her sister – the husband of her sister had taken part in twelve military campaigns with the Prophet ﷺ, and my sister was with him in six of them. She said, “We used to treat the wounded and look after the sick. My sister asked the Prophet ﷺ, ‘Is there any harm for one of us if she does not have an outer garment (jilbab) that she does not go out?’ He said, ‘Let her companion clothe her with some of her outer garment, and let her witness the good and the supplication of the Muslims.’” When Umm Atiyyah arrived, I asked her, “Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ?” She said, “May my father be sacrificed for him, yes!” – and she never mentioned him without saying, “May my father be sacrificed for him” – “I heard him say, ‘The young girls and the secluded women – or: the secluded young girls – and the menstruating women should go out and witness the good and the supplication of the believers, and the menstruating women should keep away from the prayer ground.’” Hafsah said: I said, “The menstruating women?” She said, “Does she not attend Arafah and such and such?”
Translator’s note: “My sister”: here Hafsah is already reproducing the words of the woman who arrived. “The good” refers to the Eid prayer and the gathering. Arafah: the standing at Arafah during Hajj; “such and such”: other rites.
